Social burn out

I’ve been quiet lately, but for good reason. I think the release of Fangs and Family exhausted me. The last few weeks were challenging, and being a one-man circus didn’t help my ability to simultaneously be a publisher, marketer and author.

To say it plainly, my battery just died, and I took a step back to recharge. It doesn’t help that I’m a natural introvert, and I find social media particularly tricky to engage with. Yet it is a modern world, and it is very much mandatory that you keep your book and yourself in the public space.

On the bright side, I’m finishing our new book—the first in a duology. This time, it is a why I chose epic fantasy, and … oh my, I had fun writing it. I also had a couple of misunderstandings with my co-writer and editor-in-chief.

I was writing a particular scene when our male main character felt very … well, let’s say, eager to be with the woman of his dreams, and I was trying to find the right wording to express this eagerness. With the help of a dictionary, I found what I thought was a perfect description and shouted to Mark.

‘Can I write ‘restive horse’?’

and the answer came:

‘Why on earth do you want to put restive hoes in the book?’

It’s not that he was enraged, as I’m known to use weird and wonderful words he has to correct later, but I’m also known to incorporate questionable content, and restive hoes wouldn’t be the worst of what my mind can come up with.

Still, I was laughing so hard I couldn’t write for a good half hour. So, I thought I would share this little snippet of our daily life with you.

That’s the best. Stepping back and disconnecting is necessary. I try to build blocks for that into my schedule specifically for that. It doesn’t always happen, and sometimes I need to step back when it’s not on the schedule. A book or crocheting and a cup of tea is always a perk for me. Walks on the beach too, but I always make time for that!
