What can I say, I love the new Shogun, but it is interesting how taste changes. I remember when I was a tween, so somewhere around the age of eleven and Old Shogun with Richard Chamberlain was on TV. I tended to sneak past my bedtime to watch it through the gap between doors and the door frame.

The times were different, and the content of the movie wasn’t appropriate for curious almost teenager, but I didn’t care. I loved John Blackthorn with a passion only a teenage heart can produce, and I wasn’t afraid of my parents grounding.

When Disney announced they were going to release a new Shogun, I was sceptic because it is difficult to match to perfection, but much to my surprise, the series is excellent. It’s just … my crush changed completely. John Blackthorn is not cutting it anymore, but lord Toranaga and portraying him actor Hiroyuki Sanada … oh my. He is a perfect example of what modern books call a Shadow daddy. Maybe it is because of the actor’s performance, but all I can think now is to write a similar character in my books, but I’m not sure if I’m good enough to capture the quiet dominance and the sarcastic eye-roll he does when someone spews bullshit.

If you struggle to find something interesting to watch, watch Shogun. I know it is on Disney, and this streaming service has recently had streams of flop where they pushed political agenda, but this series is brilliant, and I can’t get enough of it.
